The last paragraph is still direct in style ; but in the description of the dead man Defoe leaves his restraint for a moment to give us a grapic and realistic picture of the repulsive sight : His clothes were pulled off , his jaw fallen , his eyes open in a most frightful posture .

After this , the return to the calm , matter-of-fact style in the last sentence is even more effective .

Here then is a passage of very powerful writing , moving and varied , which is simple throughout : and which is certainly literature .

The general conclusion which emerges from the discussion therefore is surely this : that of the best prose in English , some is simple , some complicated ; whereas the worst prose is all complicated .

The most highly involved language can be very fine , if handled by a writer who is master of every rhythm and every distinction in meaning ; but a needless complexity is pompous , tedious and unattractive : whereas simplicity , because it frees us from so many faults , is a guarantee of at least a minimum level of good writing .
